Jet lag and shift work sleep disorders: how to help reset the internal clock.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Jet lag sleep disorder and shift work sleep disorder are the result of dyssynchrony between the internal clock and the external light-dark cycle, brought on by rapid travel across time zones or by working a nonstandard schedule. Symptoms can be minimized by optimizing the sleep environment, by strategic avoidance of and exposure to light, and also with drug and behavioral therapies.

Impact of shift work on the health and safety of nurses and patients.
Shift work generally is defined as work hours that are scheduled outside of daylight. Shift work disrupts the synchronous relationship between the body's internal clock and the environment. The disruption often results in problems such as sleep disturbances, increased accidents and injuries, and social isolation. Physiologic effects include changes in rhythms of core temperature, various hormon...
متن کاملCircadian and wakefulness-sleep modulation of cognition in humans
Cognitive and affective processes vary over the course of the 24 h day. Time of day dependent changes in human cognition are modulated by an internal circadian timekeeping system with a near-24 h period. The human circadian timekeeping system interacts with sleep-wakefulness regulatory processes to modulate brain arousal, neurocognitive and affective function. Brain arousal is regulated by asce...
متن کاملAccelerating recovery from jet lag: prediction from a multi-oscillator model and its experimental confirmation in model animals
The endogenous circadian clock drives oscillations that are completely synchronized with the environmental day-night rhythms with a period of approximately 24 hours. Temporal misalignment between one's internal circadian clock and the external solar time often occurs in shift workers and long-distance travelers; such misalignments are accompanied by sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal distr...
متن کاملCircadian rhythms of European and African-Americans after a large delay of sleep as in jet lag and night work
Jet travel and night shift work produce large changes in when people sleep, work and eat; a challenge that was not encountered during most of our evolution. Successful adaptation would require the internal, master, circadian clock to make large phase shifts to reduce the circadian misalignment between circadian rhythms and the times for sleep, work and meals. We compared African-Americans and n...
متن کاملCircadian Biology: The Early Bird Catches the Morning Shift
Shift work misaligns the environment and the body's internal clock. A new study suggests that this 'social jet lag' can be remedied by a 'personalized schedule', an intervention that may help reduce circadian misalignment and pathologies in shift workers.
